Best way to install latest vCenter on different VM

Hi all Smiley Happy

I am currently running VMware 4 with vcenter 4.0 on a server 2003 VM on an IBM Blade S.

I need to upgrade to 4.1 but of course it needs a 64 bit operating system.

I have set up another VM running 2003 64bit.

What is the best method of installing vcenter 4.1 on this new VM whilst the original vcenter server 4.0 is running?

Thanks

Tracy

See the upgrade guide from VMware site.

But if your VMware cluster is really simple you can also consider to build a new and clean vCenter and reconnect the host to this new one.

if you do not really care about folder/VM permission or performance statistic then Andre's advise of adding the host to the vcenter is the easiest way

So what order would I do this in?

Install and setup the new VM/latest vCenter server then... what would I do to point the hosts (we have 2) from the original vCenter server to the new one? can two vCentre servers be powered on at the same time? will this cause any issues?

thanks

2 vCenters can be running at the same time.

All you need to do is from the first vCenter disconnect/remove each host (this will not affect any running VMs), then add these hosts to the new vCenter.

I have found the data migration tool which looks great.

One last question; seeing as this is the vCenter server and client I should be able to do this during work hours without any impact on the running VMs right?

thanks
