datastore extents

I have 2 500GB LUNS. only one is added as a datastore to the cluster. If I want to create a 1TB LUN, Is it a good practice to do extents? Or should i create a 1TB LUn instead?

I have created a 3TB datastore using two 1.5TB LUNs with no problems at all over 12 the months in service.

Other experts here will be able to tell you whether it is good practice or not but it seems to be mainstream to me.

i would advise creating multiple 500GB, as this would ensure better performance across all LUN, for example if one LUN is slow due to bad VM it does not affect the rest of the VM. In terms of SCSI reservation and etc it's much better too.

I don't seen the point in extents to be honest. Just create two or a single large one... no point in extending as it doesn't add any value it only makes managing it more difficult especially when troubleshooting.
