Hi there
i need in our company to find out of how i can create a failover system soe 2 server have the same ESXi servers, and the problem is i have a budget on zero, so i hope there are a free software to help me our mabey ESXi can do that be defulat?
hope sombardy can help me here, thanks a lot
i have trying to Google a small and i hit this product: http://www.veeam.com/virtual-machine-backup-solution-free.html
its free and i will look about its can help me, there are a pay version to, but i think for home used and only 2 computers/servers in a business case its mabey work well! i will give it a shut, becures its a lot of money else for small business.
Especially you are running a whitebox system at home (from your other thread), this is in no way recommended for production, even with a small business.
Veeam works nice but for snapshot based full VM backup you still need at least a VMWare Essentials license to get access to storage APIs (which are disabled with ESXi free license).
All backup solutions for the free ESXi are kind of slow, so in a production environment with business critical server VMs running on the host(s) this is not a solution.
You should also read this: http://veeampdf.s3.amazonaws.com/datasheet/veeam_backup_and_replication-free_vs_full.pdf?AWSAccessKe...
So after the 30-day-trial period the full/paid version gets limited features as switching to free license of Veeam.
You can Achieve this if you have HA Setup and shared disk.
Since you are looking for free than you can go ahead with the Free trail of 60 days and tried that.
For a long run if you want to try than you can try for Open stack but i am not sure about it.
I think you need to provide some more information here.
If there is just a requirement to fail from one Host to the other (and you have share storage) you can use a DRS Cluster with HA. If the host are geographically separate you d need to look at other alternatives.
Could you give some more information on the environment

what i want basic is when i create a virtual machine on one its copy/backup to ahoutr esxi setup, so if the main server breakdown and the raid are in async i can fast copy the virtualmaschines back agin widthout losing data,
hope you understand, i dont want ot close my machines to backup, i want live-on-the-fly backup to ahortuer system
something like replication?
http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere/VMware-vSphere-Replication-Overview.pdf
In order to do this you d really need some form of shared storage, or a 3 node cluster and use something like Vsan (at a cost)
The cheapest (although not free) would be an NFS or iscsi storage device.

Yeah replication i thnk its is thanks a lot to remind me!
Its working fine on the free ESXi or shut i need to pay to the fullversion of ESXi?
You d need the full version for this, plus a vcenter license, that's why I suggested the cheaper share disk route
Think its included in the essentials plus kit..
Orh, okay where can i see the prices for vCenter licens and ESXi licens?
vSphere Pricing & Licensing
Thanks my last problem is, i can't find what licens i need, becures a kind of the licens its pretty spicy
i need following.
2x ESXi - servers setup ( free - mabey ) and for that i need a sync between master => slave server over the internet in Replication
so what licens are i'm minium need to buy if i want this setup, and can i doe that on or free ESXi or are i'm needing to buy the biggeste licens from VMWare?
as you want to spend less money i would recommend: the essesntials plus kit
hmmm. 3.150€ pretty spicy for using replication function damit...
Im fairly sure you d need to buy an additional venter license too, as with replication it's assumed it would be across vcenters (but that would need VMware sales to confirm)

i haven't used veeam in a few years, but previous versions required vcenter and didn't support stand alone host backups.
alot of guys on here use it so I'm sure they can give you an answer.

VB&R doesn't require vCenter, it can work smoothly with standalone hosts, as long as they are using paid vSphere license.

If you're using paid vSphere version, you can indeed utilize Veeam Backup and Replication Free. Also, in the recent update Veeam has made some PS commandlets available in free version. So now, you can techically schedule backups.
Cheers.
