I need to convert backups created with Symantec Backup Exec 8.5 to Virtual Machines.
I am in trouble because even using the same backup program on the same group of machine I get unpredictable results while attempting to convert the .sv2i backup files to VM. I attempted to use different versione of VMware converter, with the same unpredictable results.
Sometimes the conversion works fine, other times the conversion does not start at all with the message "the source virtual machine is not recognized".
I suspect I make some mistake while creating the backup. but I can't understand what is the problem.
Is there any way to troubleshoot the problem or at least to get further details about messages like "the source virtual machine is not recognized"?
Is there any tool to analyze a backup before attempting to convert it?
Regards
Marius
which source machines are not recognized ?
I would not expect that images of Linux or Windows7 or 2008 R2 are recognized.
Also machines with unusual boot.ini entries would probably not work
Anyway - you can always use Symantec Backup Exec itself to restore those images into a VM

... one of my critical images is a Windows 2000 server...

So, what images are expected to allow import from .sv2i files?

2000, XP or 2003 should work - but you also must check the sv2i version.
AFAIK the converter documentation is still wrong when specifying the versions.
If it does not work with Converter 4.0.1 - try 3.0.3 as well
