vSphere and certificates

hi,

i'm relatively new to the IT industry and have much to learn.

among the many things i need to learn is the topic of certificates.

i'm sure there's much documentation out there (and i wouldn't mind if anyone shared some links), but with so many technical concepts still out of my grasp, i'm finding it hard to digest technical documents.

can someone give me an explanation in simple terms on what certificates are, how do they work and how would i go about implementing certificates in a generic vSphere environment from scratch?

A clear, concise, and complete post would be greatly appreciated. i may be new to VMware but i'm not new to online forums and i'll be sure to mark helpful and correct answers!

I recommend you first read about certificates, that is not only used by vSphere, and after you understand what certificates are, let us know any doubt about implement certificates in vSphere, that already implement self signed certificate for all default installation, but we have the option to use CA signed certificates. I've read through most of the documentation and it seems a pretty lengthy, convoluted and prone to failure process when it comes to implementing certificates in a vSphere enviroment.

Do organizations really go through all this trouble? Or maybe most just stick with the default self signed certificates?
