How to use USB drives as a datastore to host VM's

Trying to use an UP Core Plus with ESXi to host a software fire wall and a seperate file server and host the servers from a datastore on usb drives.

Is this possible?    I have gotten as far as making the drives show up in devices but i cant add then as a data store.
