Consolidating stuck at "in progress" state

Virtual machine consolidating process is stuck at "in progress" state. Nothing seems to happen and the process was started almost an hour ago. There is not percentage bar running that you are used to. The VM itself is powered ON and it cannot be turned off because the services it's providing.

Now here is some background info. We already tried to consolidate the snapshots yesterday and it run all the way up until 99% and failed with notion of "insufficient storage space" (or something of the kind). So we migrated another VM to another storage unit to create more space. There are two snapshots showing in the snapshot manager and both are atleast 3 months old. Yesterday there were 3 snapshots and one was deleted but the consolidation process failed. Has this happened to anyone else and should we wait this out or is there something we can do?

We are using vSphere 5.5.0

It actually started running after maybe one and a half hours. So for now everything looks alright (while the processing speed may be everything but breathtaking).

What is the size of VM, its disks ! Consolidation task takes time to process on VMs with larger VMDKs. Its worth to wait to get it complete unless its shows any error.

Provisioned space is nearly 2TB. By the way I noticed that during the consolidation the available storage space has decreased. Is this part of the process and should it become available once complete?

Yes, free space on datastore while consolidation matters. If your snapshot file is larger than the free space available on datastore then you gonna face this problem. Check snapshot file size, if require migrate some VMs off to another datastore.
