I'd like to burn a few VMs onto a DVD and have them run in-place. (i.e. the user installs VMWare Player, but not the VMs themselves) I'd prefer not to require the user to copy the VM directories off and run from the hard drive.
I found this documentation for GSX:
http://www.vmware.com/support/gsx3/doc/running_vmfromcd-dvd_gsx.html
But it doesn't work on VMWare Player.
I found a post on another web site recommending the addition of:
workingDir = "C:\"
to the .vmx file, but that also didn't help.
I still get the error popup:
"Error while opening the virtual machine: No permission to access this virtual machine."
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yeah, it's a known issue. I haven't tried it, but I think you can try copying just the .vmx file to the local disk (leaving the .vmdk virtual disks on the DVD). The .vmx file should be configured so that the working directory points to a writable location and to have absolute paths to the disk files. Then you can modify the .vmx file to treat the disks as non-persistent (or you can open the local copy of the .vmx file and take a snapshot).
Somewhat out-dated - anyway - I do that like described here
