Running a ubuntu 6.06 guest on Workstation 6.0.1 (XP sp2 host). While installing VMware Tools, the below message is written to the XF86ConfigLog file. When I reboot ubuntu X fails and I'm placed into a shell. Uninstalling Tools fixes the problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

I also have exactly the same bug having just upgraded vmware tools.
Because I never heard anything about this, I resolved it by installing ubuntu 7.04 instead. Then Tools worked fine.
A shame... the 6.06 is supposed to be supported for years still to come. Why does VMware insist on not testing such a long-term version? Ho hum...
I was able to successfully install the tools on ubuntu 6.06, but after doing "apt-get dist-upgrade" on the system to update the X server, I ran into the same problem after building the vmware tools. Now I have a non-functional X server.
I had updated X before installing Tools. Uninstalling Tools returns X to the land of the living.
I finally got this to work by editing xorg.conf to remove references to a wacom device (after uninstalling, then installing tools from the just-released 6.0.2).
I have run into the same problem with Ubuntu 6.06 and StartCom Multi-Media Edition 5.0.6. Uninstall / re-install of VMware Tools has not helped...the wacom entries are not present in my xorg.conf...I am installing VMware Tools provided with Workstation 6.0.2 and the reults are always the same...no GUI...I am becoming very frustrated by this issue
Is there another step that I have missed?
I'm having exactly the same issue although I'm using the Workstation 6.0.2 version.
Is there a solution for this?
In the mean time I installed the VMware Tools of the VMware Server 1.0.4 and these seem to work correctly but of course this is just working around the issue.
Combination of the following actions has worked for me:
(I don't know which one is essential and which one is not.)
(1) Upgrade VMware Workstation with version 6.0.2 and install vmware-tools.
(2) As twall suggested, comment out all references to "wacom" devices and all InputDevices that refers to the devices containing wacom in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. (See my xorg.conf file, for example.)
(3) Replace 'vmware_drv.so' with 'vmware_drv.so.BeforeVMwareToolsInstall' in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers directory.
Thanks for that Jae Lea! I also did the apt-get dist-upgrade. I then also had this same problem. I did step 3 above and that fixed it for me...
