Where to find beginners tutorial to use Workstation Player

Between posting here and on reddit, I am getting an amazing amount of conflicting information in regards to using VMware Workstation Player 16. My main issue is not being able to scale the virtual machine display to my full screen size. Some say the settings are the problem. Some say I need VMware Tools installed. Some say VMware Tools should have come with Workstation Player 16. I've searched about the display issue and people talk of editing the registry.

In short, as a person who knows how to use computers, but it new to virtual machines, is there are consensus on exactly how to set up a virtual machine that runs properly?
