Hello.
I am considering using NSX Edge size "Compact".
I've heard that Compact should be used in a test environment, but can you support Vmware even if you use it in a production environment ?
This is a prodction environmentnot for test .
Size of the edge should be based on use case irrespective you are running a testing/production. For eg if you are planning to do a testing on load balancing which requires L7 engine, you certainly need X-Large form factor also reservation at compute level will get configured for all the Edges.Proper capacity planning and monitoring is required and NSX management software's are also contributing factor from a resource usage prespective- keep that in mind . Running a standalone edge and HA vSphere compute consumption is different and the more you scale it keeps demanding for more resources. Also you cannot downgrade the form-factor X-large to Large ,we can keep upgrading the form-factor but are we ok with a small service outage(Consider yourself as service provider) during that ? May not be a feasible option in all the cases ,so over provisioning might be a better approach for few use cases---> X-large . Below picture is from NSX design guide and the missing part is storage which you can check in the screenshot provided by Amol. For POC/Testing - i would prefer to start with Compact and if needed upgrade to Large . Also it makes more sense to test it with right form-factor rather than assuming higher form-factor will give better performance. So test it with the right form factor.
Hi,
Do you want to do any sort of load balancing you will need NSX Large and above ?
How big is your environment? Are you going to use any sort of Routing protocol??
Compact/Large VM requirement has very less difference, Kindly see below chart for more detail :
I remembered, we build the production test environment with Large Edge appliance.
