VNC connection is dropped by Fusion Player 13.5.0

I cannot establish a VNC connection to a VMware Fusion 13.5.0 on Intel MBP with macOS 12.7.1, although I enabled "Remote display over VNC" in the macOS 14.1.1 VM settings.

I do see that VMware binds the specified port via lsof. And I'm able to open a netcat connection to the specified port both from the local and remote host. As soon as I open the netcat connection, VMware's VNC server initiate the handshake by sending VNC protocol version "RFB 003.008".

However, VMware VNC server seems to reject my VNC clients, regardless whether the connection is initiated locally or remotely. I tried both builtin Screen Sharing and TigerVNC. In Wireshark I see that there is some initial exchange but then the TCP connection gets closed.

Found the culprit, VMware VNC server doesn't work with the following settings in the vmx file:

appleGPU0.present = "TRUE"
svga.present = "FALSE"
