Big Sur host fine for Ubuntu guest, terrible for Big Sur guest

Anything I should try? VMWare Tools are installed.

I've tried giving the guest 4 cores and 8192MB of memory and 2 cores and 4096MB of memory (the host has 12 cores and 32GB).

I've tried disabling side channel mitigations.

I've tried to downgrade the hardware version of the guest to 16.

None of these made an appreciable difference.

The problem seems to be on the guest side, as Ubuntu works fine.

Both guests use shared folders to get the code they're running. I don't have a benchmark outside this to run with them, so I suppose it's possible that it's the shared folder performance specifically that is causing the massive performance difference, which is on the order of 10X.

Other ideas or experiments I could try?
