"General failure" when configuring SSO authentication in vRO 6.0.4

We have a new install of the vRO 6.0.4 appliance and are getting the not-very-helpful message "General failure" when trying to set up SSO Authentication. All we have entered is the hostname ("https://xxx.xxx:443" and have also tried port 7444) and the Admin user and password. Not really sure where to go from here. Any ideas?

Have you imported the host certificate and SSO server certificate (from URL xxx.xxx and xxx.xxx:7444, respectively)?

Also, check if there is no big time skew between vRO and SSO machines. And check if there are some exceptions/errors in vRO configurator and SSO server logs.
