Server death

Hi,

I installed esxi 3.5 and created x VMachines on it. Today we have had an electrical cut, and the server doesn't start.

The messages are:

Controller Bus#00 Device#1F Function#02:06 Ports

No device found

And afterwards: Missing operating system

Any idea to alive the server?

Thanks

Verify in BIOS which is your boot device.

R u able to enter into grub screen ? If yes please follow the steps as under

  1. Reboot the host.

  2. At the grub loader prompt select
    Service Console-troubleshooting
    mode
. This may allow you to boot and enter the
    system.

Note: In cases where the system does not boot in
this mode, refer to the instructions below to file a Support Request with VMware
    Support.

  3. Log in to the Service Console as the user
    root

  4. Run the following command
to update the known PCI settings: esxcfg-boot -p

  5. Run the following command to update the boot settings:
    esxcfg-boot -b

  6. Run the following command to reinitialize the boot
    files: esxcfg-boot -r

  7. Reboot the host: shutdown -r 0

  8. Select the default VMware ESX
    server
    boot menu option.

See if that helps

Thanks ,

Amit

Hi,

No I am not able to enter to the grub screen.

It just say "Controller Bus#00 Device#1 F Function#02:06Ports

Device not found

AHCI BIOS not installed"...

then after the post it says

"Missing operating system"

and then it starts the DHCP.

And that's it.

In the WEBBios the devices are OK. There are 4 physical devices and 2 virtual. And here I put from which of them I want to boot the server.

In the normal Bios there is just one device:

.- IDE CD:Matshitadvd-ram ...

.-PCI SCSI:(Bus3 Dev00) PCI Raid Ad

.-PCI BEV:IBA GE Slot 1E00..

Thans a lot in advance

RIP.

There is obviously something wrong with your hard disks or disk controller. Not like we can really help you here with this non-vmware issue. Did you have a RAID configured or can you see hard disks in the controller configuration?

Hi i too agree with MKguy ... its purely a hardware issue

Hi

It is in raid and we see them in the webbios...

But the hardware vendor says there is no problem with the HD... is not the SO that has no way to boot?

Thankss

Which hardware do you have?

Is there a diagnostic CD for your hardware?

I've had this sort of thing happen on servers before.

Checked the RAID configuration in the RAID BIOS and looked like it had been wiped - attempted to copy from disk and nothing.

When it's booting are you getting a logical array? Or nothing?

To fix it I unplugged all the power and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes.

I've found sometime a electrical failure or power surge can corrupt the confige and it's not until the system is completely powered down and been given time to discharge the config can be read again.

Worth a shot - worked from me on a Windows server after a power outage Smiley Happy

This doesn't work.

I think it is that it has lost the grub and it doesn't know how to start.

I am trying different tools(knoppix,..) to see if it is posible to see the hard disk and do a copy of the Virtual machines to other hard disk.

And if I am abel to do this, install again the exsi and import the Virtual machines...this is the plan

Thanks
