Upgrading ESX 3.5 to 3.5U3

Greetings All,

We currently run 3 ESX servers (version 3.5.0, 82663) and I have been tasked with a "pilot" version of vmView, to get the ful functionality out of this product we need to be running 3.5 U3.

The question is, is this a case of using the most recent image, and selecting upgrade - then make sure I leave all the luns and partitions exactly as they are in the upgrade?

All the images are stored on a Fibre attached SAN which all 3 hosts share, we are running HA & Vmotion.

I have read the "upgrade guide" which covers upgrades of pretty much everything except this.

Any help would be fantastic.

Hi,

Yes , while you do an upgrade of the ESX 3.5 servers you need to select the Keep VMFS volumes option during the installation . This will make sure that your VMFS volumes are not formatted.

Thanks,

Samir

Many Thanks for your reply.

Is it best to use the full product to run the upgrade from or the installable update?

VMware ESX 3.5 Update 3 - Latest Version: 3.5 Update 3 | 2008/11/06 | Build: 123630

or

VMware ESXi 3.5 Installable Update 3 - Latest Version: 3.5 Update 3 | 2008/11/06 | Build: 123629

Both would appear to be acceptable, just wondering if you've had experience of either?

thanks again.

Hey,

Both are different here one is ESX server and one is ESXi server , never do an upgrade of ESX server to ESXi server thats not the correct upgrade path. If you are using ESX then use this VMware ESX 3.5 Update 3 - Latest Version: 3.5 Update 3 | 2008/11/06 | Build: 123630 do not use VMware ESXi 3.5 Installable Update 3 - Latest Version: 3.5 Update 3 | 2008/11/06 | Build: 123629 for upgrade.

Thanks,

Samir

Hi,

I'm still currently in the throws of upgrading, once I have finished, I will certainly mark this as completed, however just wanted to keep this open until i've finished in case of problems.

Thanks
