Take a look at the following:

http://blog.scottlowe.org/2007/09/12/vmworld-2007-session-on-advanced-diagnostics-log-analysis/

I would highly recommend taking a look at the VMworld 07 session on Advanced Log Analysis, the video is up for free and I believe there was a recent one done in VMworld Europe 2008 that has further details if you're interested.

unless you have a vmworld account you can't access the files, you may have to post them as an attachment William.....or I can.

Hey Troy,

Yea, I forgot to mention in the post that a VMworld account is required but also I know the conferences were recent, so I'm not sure if they're free for the public and I was not sure if I could post.

/var/log/vmware/hostd.log contains information on the agent that manages and configures the ESX Server host and its virtual machines

You should also take a look inside the various logs to get an idea of what's being logged and doing a search on the forum to see some of the issues that can be identified using the hostd.log
