Licensing funnies

Has anyone else had the issue whereby their licence server does not report all the hosts which have taken licences from it?

At the moment, my licence server is reporting only approximately half of what it should be reporting, with respect to both Starter/Std/Ent licences and VC Agent licences.

And yes, the hosts are definitely configured to point to this licence server!

Just "pointing to" as you mentioned or did you also set them to "licensed" ?

Only weird issue we had was after renaming some of the esx servers that they still appear with their old name in the list of licensed servers.

Hello,

We have seen that with a low number of licenses, we run out of licenses with only one machine licensed. Very odd, if we restart the license server, the problem went away.

The FlexLM product (which is what VMware uses) should report all host who have a license. Does restarting the license server change this behavior?

Also, have you verified that all the hosts in question are seeing the same license server? You can easily check this by using 'grep SERVER /etc/vmware/license.cfg' on each ESX Server. Or use the VI Client. Just something to check.

If all that checks out and the restart does not change the behavior, I think you have a legitimate issue to bring up to VMware Support.

Best regards,

Edward
