Would like to understand if ESX is a type-2 hypervisor or type-1 ? I am new to Virtualization.
Since vSphere ESXi is a bare-metal hypervisor, it is a Type 1 hypervisor, see this blog for additional details: Virtualization hypervisor comparison: Type 1 vs. Type 2 hypervisors

Thank you Richardson.
Below was sent to me by a VMware support team member ..:smileyconfused:
> Yes, ESX 4.0 Update 4, ESX 4.1 Update 2, ESX 4.1 Update 3, ESXi 5.0 Update
> 1,ESXi 5.0 Update 2 and ESXi 5.1 are all Type-2 Hypervisors.
Hey,
I'm wondering where you got this answer 😉
Richardson is right, ESXi is a type-1 hypervisor.

Thank you folks
You're welcome, and don't forget mark answers as helpful or correct.
Those terms are rather arbitrary. What is it that you really want to know about the ESXi software architecture?
@jmattson -
Well I was actually starting to read and find out about creating VMs on top of my RHEL server using VMware platform.
My intention was to find out if ESX is the right software for it or not.
Since my reading, and the answer that I got from VMware customer support team were contradicting, I posted the above question.
Thanks - Ravi
If the question is, "Can ESXi be installed on RHEL," the answer is no. ESXi is an operating system.
