Vm's to migrate with the help of USB device.

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for solution to move Vm's from one Esx environment to other

environment. There is no connectivity between this two environment.

I need to move the Vm's with the help of USB drive. Most of the Vm's are

with multiple disks and disks are not in a single datastore, they are

distributed in multiple datastore. By just coping the vmdk to usb drive

will sure give problem if I attach them to the new environment.

I have small steps written down below, to migrate this VM's.

1) Attach the Usb drive to windows Client. Map it with some share name. Make sure sharing path has write permission.

2) Shutdown the Vm

3) Rename the orginal Vm with testvm-org

4) Clone the Vm with the real name of vm, eg. testvm, while

cloning use Thin Format for disk. Not to clone on the same Datastore

where Orginal Vm resides.

5) Start the Vm and check if it works well.

6) Export the Vm to share location which is made in first step.

7) Attach the usb disk to the new esx environment windows client.

😎 Import it with the help VC.

Is there any step I have not mention ?or any thing I can add in my steps for safe migration.

Any Chance you could use Vmware Converter to V2V the VM from one environment to another? or is their no network connection whatsoever to the new environment?

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I agree with you, but due to some reason I will not be able to use Vmware Converter in my Source Environment, whereas I can use them in distination environment. Thats the reason I wrote the steps in my post. Will you would be able to confirm me if the steps are rights or some thing is missing.

I've never had experience with what your attempting. I'm wondering if it would be easier to take the external hard drive connect it to an ESX host format it as VMFS then Clone the VM like you stated above. Detach the USB then move it to the other environment. Connect it to an ESX host in the new environment copy the VM to the new Datastore and then add the VMX to the Host and then Power up the VM.
