I am using Vmware Esxi on IBM server x 3859 M2.
I have one Virtual machine which want to be available 24 X 7 but even then i won't be using more than 5-6 hrs or sometimes not used.
I am worried about the power consumption of how much its going to be used.
Is there any way to put server on standby so that i consumes minimal power and then i can activate remotely when i want o use
Hi Mirror,
Yes this is possible through a feature called DPM (Distributed Power Management). This feature is actually designed for the same reason you mentioned in your question. You can read more on this on the below link,
http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/Distributed-Power-Management-vSphere.pdf
Thanks,
I read that but could not get it if i need any specual plugin or licence for that.
is this feature in esxi or vsphere client or vcenter
Also will it work if my vcenter is on same Esx host VM which i want to standby
Hi Mirror,
This is a feature of vCenter and it works in conjunction with DRS. You will have to configure the DPM according to your needs. It does not matter where vCenter is running as long as there are sufficient resources available in the cluster to move the vCenter VM.
Hi,
Check below blog for step by step configuration of DPM
How to configure VMware Distributed Power Management (DPM)
I hope it helps you.
