Please help,
I have just installed a trial version of workstation and converter on a Vista x64 ulitmate machine. Trying to P2V from Xp sp2 to Vista. Have tried numerous times with remote install of converter and reboots. Have configured as a pull from vista and a push from xp. Have confirmed the ability to create a file on the workstation from the source machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Log: (I cancelled this job after it sat for a long time at 2%)

A local or remote hot clone of a Windows operating system to a virtual machine fails with the following error message: Image processing task has failed with Platform Error fault: 23. This message indicates a hardware failure error, which causes VMware Converter to stop cloning.
Doesnt look promising. However, you can try minimizing the resulting image by at least 1mb. This forces a file-by-file clone which can avoid conversion of the free space. This may be useful the hardware failure is corruption residing on only the free space.
vmware-client.log (capture a record on the source)
- Contains actions taken on the Converter application are written here.
- Does NOT contain import/reconfiguration information
- Is stored under the user’s (the user who ran the Converter Application) temp directory.
vmware-converter.log (capture a record on the system where Converter is installed)
- Contains information regarding the import/reconfiguration steps taken by the agent when converting the physical/virtual machine.
- Is available in the Source Physical Machine OS’s temp directory (C:\Windows\Temp\vmware-temp)
Can you please attach the vmware-converter-#.log for this task?
Hello,
The P2V agent did not continue after the install.
Restart the source machine and verity that the VMware P2V agent loads OK.
If it is running then shut down all non essential services eg. firewall antivirus etc. and try again
There are most likely a few other files just like this on in that log directory. This log file doesnt hold any cloning task information. I suspect you might have the wrong log file. If you are unsure which rotational logfile is the correct one, you can zip them all up and attach the .zip file instead.

I've rebooted numerous times and verified that VMWare converter service is running. Have also experimented by turning off numerous combinations of services. Still stuck at 2%...
Thanks.
I see three possible causes.
Volume corruption, using a UNC or a hibernate.sys file issue.
1) Try a local disk as the target for the import or MAP a drive instead.
2) Turn of the hibernate feature
3) Run a checkdisk

Each time I run chkdsk (or chkdsk /f), it completes, but reports:
"Correcting errors in the master file table's MFT Bitmap attribute."
"Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap."
"Windows found problems with the fiel system."
I have successfully run chkdsk /f several times (on reboot) and still it is the same. What to do?
Have disabled hibernation, and am running P2V to a mapped drive from the Physical machine. Since the machine is a laptop, I'm not sure how to clone 35GB of used C: to 40GB of unused 😧 drive. Is this possible? Does chkdsk suggest the problem is with the volume?
Rerunning now.

For the most part this can be ignored

Try to an xp or win2k3 share. You could even map it and push it as Z:\cerdocyon\jackal\jackal\jackal.vmdk

Read-only CHKDSK will abort before it completes all three phases if it encounters errors in earlier phases and is prone to falsely reporting errors when in read-only mode. That is, CHKDSK may report that a disk is corrupted even when there is no real corruption present. This can happen if NTFS happens to modify areas of the disk on behalf of some program activity that CHKDSK is examining at the same time. To verify a volume correctly, the volume must be in a static state, and the only way to guarantee that state is to lock the volume. CHKDSK only locks the volume when /F or /R (which implies "F") is specified. Thus, you may need to run CHKDSK more than once to get it to complete all stages in read-only mode.

I mapped a drive to
cerdocyon\jackal and tried to clone the target to that mapped drive, no luck.
I made space on my D partition of the source (laptop) and mapped a drive to it and tried to clone. It got to 22% but failed with this message:
Error 23 reading 65536 bytes starting from 13336113152 from the source volume
I did boot to the recovery console and run FIXMBR, chkdsk still detects errors. Please advise.
Log attached.

I tried minimizing the image and still received errors. It would seem that my harddrive can not be cloned.
What can I try beyond chkdsk /f to resolve hardware errors/ disk corruption? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can try imaging your machine with something like ghost/symantec/acronis. Restore it to a VM and then flush it with vmware converter's "configure machine" wizard.
You could also use that image as a backup and try using window's repair or inplace upgrade on the source machine. But this is just an idea off the top of my head. Maybe others can comment on successful workarounds?
