license and updated manager

All, I have 2 questions

1) I have a esx 3.5 host in a vCenter. I used LM manager for the license for this 3.5. Is it truth that I will not see the licensing inside the vCenter lincensing manager? If not, what do I do to see the 3.5 license in vCenter

2) my attempt to use the update manager inside vCenter to updated the 3.5 to 4.0 has failed many times. Is there any temporary temp file on the vCenter server or ESX 3.5 host that I need to remove before I try to use the update manager again? What is the reason that it fail? the error message is that my storage place maybe full or the patch is already there

Thanks

Take a look at License Server Configuration for vCenter Server 4.0. Section Connect vCenter Server 4.0 to a License Server explains how to connect to your LM license manager (I assume you installed it on your Virtual Center 2.5 server).

In vCenter - in the same window where you entered your vCenter Server license - there is a input field to enter your FlexLM license server for your 3.5 hosts (syntax: 27000@yourlicenseserver.yourdomain.local)

2) my attempt to use the update manager inside vCenter to updated the 3.5 to 4.0 has failed many times. Not exactly sure what causes the error. When updating make sure there's enough free space in the root file system as well as in the local VMFS datastore.

Depending on the number of hosts you have I'd recommend a fresh install, since an update does not change the partitions created with ESX 3.5. Also think of using ESXi instead of ESX.

The license manager for 3.x hosts can be installated as a separated part and also on another system.

You can find the install file on vCenter 2.x download.

I am only testing the vCenter. so it is an evulation copy. Can I still make the vCenter see my esx 3.5 host and its license key? I cannot find a field to put in my LM license server.

Thanks

To license old ESX/ESXi 3.x you have to install and use the old license server.

You can download it from vCenter 2.5 downloads.
