have not found a discussion on that so far, just want to share my experience, maybe it is useful for somebody:
I updated a fully patched esx 4.0 standalone Server with DAS, no SAN to esx 4.0 update 1a. Hardware: FSC TX 300 S4
The Update went smooth with
"C:\Programme\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin\vihostupdate.pl" --server <SERVERNAME> -i -b ".\ESX-4.0.0-update01a.zip"
I detected one minor issue:
After reboot the vSphere Client still stated "ESX 4.0.0 175625" beside the host's name, while under Help/"Info about VMWare Vsphere" the correct build 208167 is stated.
"C:\Programme\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin\vihostupdate.pl" --server <SERVERNAME> --query
