vmware update manager had a failure

Hello All,

This is regarding Vmware Update manager had a failure after upgradation with VC2.5 from VC 2.0.2.

We have three hots in our production environment.Cluster is configured for all three hosts. we have VC 2.0.2 and ESX 3.0.2

We recently upgraded the VC and ESX for latest version ie VC 2.5 and ESX 3.5. Earlier we were using third party tool to download the patches and install it. But now our management decided not to use Third Party tool to download patch.

So we planned to use "Vmware Update Manager" which is an inbuilt feature in VC2.5....But since i am unable to download any patches. Its giving the error as "Vmware update Manager had a failure"

So could you please provide me the steps to configure the Vmware update manager so that If i had missed out something i can correct it.

thanks

Raghu

Hi Raghu

You could check if your Virtual Center is set to use the correct communications port ( Default 80 )

Here are the steps:

1) From your VI client: Administration->VirtualCenter Management Server Configuration->Web Service (Check the values for the http and https ports in the appropriate text boxes.)

Was the IP of your VC ever changed?, if so the configuration of the Update manager may still reflect the old IP. your best bet in this case would be to reinstall Update manager.

You say " since i am unable to download any patches. Its giving the error as "Vmware update Manager had a failure""

Does this mean, your Update Manager is unable to download any patches from the internet? Could your firewall be stopping you? You can verify what patches have been downloaded, but looking at the repository in the Update Manager tab. Also, when you installed VUM, you gave the program a location to store data files. You can look in that location, and see if things are there.

If you are talking about your guest vm not able to download, then you need to make sure a baseline is attached to the guest. This is pretty straight forward. Also, make sure the Security settings on your ESX server are allowing Update Manager.
