Installing vCenter Server 4.1

I would like to install vCenter Server 4.1 on a laptop, but I'm getting an error.

Hardware specs:

Dell Latitude E6510

Intel Core i5-560M (2.66GHz, 4 threads, turbo boot up to 3.2GHz, 3M cache)

Windows 7 Pro 64bit English

8GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 Memory

500 GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

After I launch vCenter Server from the Installer screen it loads the installer and has a window open up stating:

"This product can only be installed on the following 64-bit operating systems:

Windows XP SP2 or above

Windows Server 2003

Windows Server 2008"

This is my frist time using the software and have been doing a lot of reading about it.

This is a brand new system. Is it possible to install or is it possible I'm getting the error because of compatibility issues with the processor model?

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Windows 7 is the issue - it is not a supported OS to install vCenter on.

Good Luck!

Thanks and for the fast response.

Would it work if I created a VM on the laptop with CentOS 5.5 to install the vCenter on?

Here is a link to the OS compatbility guide with vCenter 4.1.   It should give you all the information you need on which OS you can install vCenter on.

No, Linux won't work either.  You could build out a VM with a supported version of Windows though.  There is also some good information in this discussion about possible workarounds.
