Paravirtualization (PVSCSI) not suited for DAS?

The following article states that paravirtualization says that PVSCSI adapter is not suited for DAS.  I'm looking to find out why it isn't "suited for DAS"... any ideas?

I am assisting a client who built a single VM on a brand new, dedicated ESXi 5.1 machine which supports PVSCSI on the boot device.  We installed CentOS6, which includes PVSCSI drivers.  Initially, the installation of OS and middleware went well, however, upon copying data in any large quantity above a few GB, seems to kill disk writes to about 5.1MB/s.

Would PVSCSI on DAS manifest itself in this way?  What is the reason NOT to use PVSCSI?

I'm wondering if we should focus on rebuilding the machine with LSI Logic device or look elsewhere and not waste our time chasing down the PVSCSI path even though DAS isn't "suited".
