Copying out VM files

Hi there,

I'd like to know  if I were to copy out a VM into my personal laptop, what files do I need to copy out? I was told that the VMDK files are not enough. hence I'd like to which files exactly?

And also if my VM application  and VM database are 2 separate servers, will it work if I were to copy them out and run them on my laptop?

Thanks.

If you laptop is isolated from the domain, you will need local users account on the VM, then I suggest you make note of the local administrator account and password, and check if this account is enabled.

Just another point, if the services in the VMs depends of domain services, for example: if the services utilized a domain account to run, you will may need change this setting to use local account and give the appropriate permission to this local account.

The most important files are the .vmdk and .vmx, but since the other files are so small, you can copy them too... If VM has any snapshot, remember to commit before copy files, and of course shutdown the VM before start the copy.

About the run the two VMs in your laptop, if you have sufficient resources to run the VM, they will work,

Thanks Richardson,

Just another question what if the VMs are joined to a domain, and I copy them out. Does that mean when  I run on my laptop, the server will no longer connect to the domain (since I am on my own network now), hence I will need to login to the VMs with it's local ID and password?

So in short, I need to know the servers local ID and password first before copying out right?

Which VMware product are you using? This question should be posted in the respective product forum area - it would get greater visibility and a faster outcome.
