Note that a vSphere Hypervisor license key will be for a stand-alone host, with basic functionality, if you have been managing with vCenter Server and using any higher level features in evaluation mode you will lose those capabilities.
I tried to activate my free license on my server, it works. But when I remove it and assign another key, I cannot activate it any more even tried to re-install the ESXi again.
