Unable to create large thin provisioned disk.

  • vCenter: Version 6.7.0 Build 10244857
  • Host: VMware ESXi, 6.5.0, 11925212

vSphere web client will not allow me to create a new VM with a disk larger than the free space available, even if it is thin provisioned.

It will, however, happily allow me to create as many disks as I want that are below the size free, even if the total is more than the free space available.

How can I force creation of a single disk that is larger than the free space in the datastore?

I am not concerned about over-provisioning since once this VM is loaded with software, it is going to be exported to another host.

That's interesting, because I keep doing this in my lab all the time.

At which point does it refuse to create the virtual disk? A screenshot may help.

I noticed the same with a 6.7 host.

So I used vmkfstools to create the vmdk and that worked as expected

That may be a possibility, but I'd have to get someone else to do it, as I do not have shell access.
