It's basically easy to do the update/patch. Make sure that any other VMware applications, or 3rd-party tools you may be using support the new version, and ensure that you have an up-to-date backup, or at least a snapshot prior to starting the update/patch installation. I usually use the fp-iso image for updates.

Also read the VMware vCenter Server 6.5 Update 2d Release Notes for important information, e.g.

Important: Upgrade and migration paths from vCenter Server 6.5 Update 2d to vCenter Server 6.7 Update 1 are not supported

Thanks Diego and a.p,

other then 3rd party tools, do we need to consider any other steps to be taken care. We will follow the below steps to upgrade.

1. Will attach the fp-iso image to vcenter from VAMI.

2. We will take the sanpshot and clone.

3. We will do installation of available updates and reboot.

These are the only steps we need to taken care, please advise.

The most important step is to login into VCSA on the linux shell and take a look if your filesystems are near full.  If youre running out of space during the Update youre lost. Only way to recover is revert to snapshot/restore VM.

- Check if your Environment is ready

- Read the ReleaseNotes

- Check space

- Take a Snapshot

- I always use update form URL rather than CDROM. You can watch VM stats for Network and can see that the VCSA update is working

- The Update process shows a progressbar in the browser. There is a "detailed" info section as well. Its normal that progress hangs on 40 or 60% for quite some time

- There is always a reboot needed after the update. Watch the browser window carefully!

- Check if the Password renewal for "root" comes active again!!! Most likely only when you perform a major release upgrade but i check this settings after every update

- SNMP often is not working again after the first reboot. Run snmp.enable again

- If everything works (including Alarm notification from vCenter) .... remove the snapshot

Joerg

Why wouldn't you go straight to 6.7? Check some enhancements it has got as outlined in this post https://www.starwindsoftware.com/blog/why-upgrade-to-vmware-vsphere-6-7-or-why-not
