cannot access web server running on ubuntu vmware workstation

I have set up an ubuntu vmware workstation machine that runs a web server.

I get it's IP (using ifconfig) but when I try to connect to the web server through a browser that runs on the host machine (windows xp) it fails.

I can ping ubuntu's IP from the windows xp host machine.

I have tried all the three available options of networking (nat,bridged,..) but I cannot access the web server.

Any ideas?

are you able to access the website with telnet from the ubuntu machine itself ?

from the ubuntu itself, telnet <ubuntu machine IP> 80 ( 80 is the default http port) , you should get a prompt , if NOT you already have an issue with your ubuntu config (check firewalls etc..)
