Workstation 7.1, Win7 host, WinXP guest: VMware VIrtual USB Mouse "This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)"

VMware: Workstation 7.1

Host: Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit

Guest: Windows XP SP3 32bit

This guest's Device Manager contains a yellow ? "Other devices" category, with a yellow ?! "VMware Virtual USB Mouse". Meanwhile, under Device Manager "Mice and other pointing devices" is shown the "VMware Pointing Device". The keyboard and mouse work fine when the guest is powered on.

Plug-and-play detects the "VMware Virtual USB Mouse" after I uninstall it, so it always returns. If I follow the Update Driver wizard to install the device, it always fails to find a matching driver. I've allowed it to search automatically and I've also pointed it to the VMware Tools driver directories. No Luck.

In Device Manager:

"Device status:" is "This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)"

"Location:" is "Location 0 (VMware Virtual USB Mouse)"

"Manufacturer:" is "Unknown"

What is that and how do I make it Go Away?
