Bug: Windows Server 16 screen is black on logon after sysprep

VMware Workstation Pro build 14.1.2 build-8497320

Windows Server 2016: Latest build with all patches

To reproduce:

  1. Build Windows Server 2016 on VMware workstation (4GB, 2vCPUs)
  2. Install VMware Tools and reboot
  3. Add all Microsoft Updates and reboot and add until there are no more updates
  4. Run Sysprep
  5. When the server reboots, add Administrator account passwords and accept EULA.
  6. Login to Windows 2016 as Administrator

Result:

  • The screen is black although the VM appears to be running and you can shut it down.

Workaround:

  1. Shutdown the Windows 2016 VM
  2. Edit settings and change the monitor from "Automatic" to a fixed size (I use 1024x768)
  3. Boot up and after login the screen will appear.

Diagnosis:

  • There is a problem or conflict setting the guest monitor size in VMware Tools after a Sysprep

I dont have to set the fixed size resolution - when the black screen appears I reboot the machine with workstation controls. After reboot the display works. Annoying tough. The Problem still exists in Workstation 15.
