"error loading operating system" in xp after blue screen

I've been running XP Pro with Fusion for over  a year without problems, until yesterday. XP blue screened on me, probably due to an attempt earlier in the week to install an Edirol driver for an external sound device. When I tried to restart windows, I got the "error loading operating system" error. What will I need to do to get XP running again. Unfortunately, I do not have any snapshots. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Welcome to the community.

Have you tried to start in Safe Mode?

Can't get to windows start-up screen. Tried booting from an xp disk and going to the dos recovery console. Chkdsk said there were one or more unrecoverable errors on the c: drive.

That really doesn't sound good.

First step you should take - unless already done - is to backup the VM's package (all the files) to make sure you can revert to the current state in case something gets worse with the VM.

If you don't necessarily need the VM running, but only some files from the VM, you could either mount the vmdk (not sure if this is an option in Fusion like it is in Windows) or attach the vmdk as an additional virtual disk to a second "helper" virtual machine.

PS: I'm going to move your thread to the VMware Fusion forum, because I think the people monitoring the Fusion forum can be more help to you.
