Windows NT 4.0 kernel panic after Tools install

Hi folks, been a long time lurker but first time I haven't been able to find an answer to something already. I haven't been able to successfully get a Windows NT 4.0 Workstation VM to boot after installing the VMware Tools. This is how I do it:

  1. Installed Windows NT 4 Workstation in VMWare Fusion 3.1.2 (332101)
  2. Updated to Service Pack 6a, or Service Pack 6a with High Encryption (same result)
  3. Reboot, no problems
  4. Choose Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools and install with defaults
  5. Reboot, kernel panic, BSOD

Interestingly enough, the VM window claims the "VMware Tools [are] out of date" despite having just done step 4. I've replicated the same problem on a 2006 Mac Pro, 2007 MacBook Pro and a 2010 MacBook. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for any help you can provide! I've been a licenced user of VMware Fusion since the pre-1.0 betas and  have bought every upgrade, but if I can't get this working it's a deal  breaker Smiley Sad
