Running VMWare Fusion 6 on Mac OS X Yosemite Beta

Hi,

I would like to know if VMWare Fusion 6 will work on the Mac OS X Yosemite Beta that apple has just released. I use the VMWare for work so I can't afford upgrading to the Beta and not having Fusion working.

Thanks!

Regards,

Sebastian

I confirm. I did the same tests with Fusion Tech Preview 2014 installed on MacOSX Yosemite and Fusion launches correctly (Fusion 6 did not). You can even modify some parameters on shutdown VMs but unable to start one. Same error messages you had 😞

Anyone has an idea about "Unable to retrieve kernel symbols" error ?

The error  "Unable to retrieve kernel symbols"  usually means the on-disk copy of the OS kernel is inaccessible to Fusion, or it somehow does not contain what Fusion expects. This same thing happened on other beta releases of OSX. If you try to run an old version of fusion that is not compatible with the Mavericks kernel, the same thing will happen. Just have to wait until Fusion development has  time to kick out another beta that will work with changes made by the Yosemite beta.

Hi Darius,

It seems to be the same problem you had in this post : My Virtual Machine doesn't start anymore in Fusion

These are the same error messages.

It could perhaps be because the location of the kernel in OS X 10.10 has moved from (hidden)

/mach_kernel

to

/System/Library/Kernels/kernel

...?

Hi Thoerr,

You mean that each VMware Fusion version must be compatible with each MacOSX kernel version ?

So why VMware has not pre released a Tech Preview for Yosemite ? Or maybe they are doing it...

*** EDIT: These steps do not work and may trigger a kernel panic! ***

BTW, one could maybe try, as an experiment:

sudo ln -s /System/Library/Kernels/kernel /mach_kernel

... and optionally also:

sudo chflags -h hidden /mach_kernel

... and see if the kernel symbols are now retrieved...?

Does not work, just tried with the Tech Preview from May. The computer crashes and reboots.

I did the first command line and then launched Fusion and tried to start one VM. Error messages disappeared  but the VM froze and it crashed all the OS. Yosemite rebooted

So, Fusion found the new kernel and probably didn't like it...

It indeed looks like thoerr's answer was right: in this case, Fusion finally found the kernel, but this new kernel didn't contain what it expected...

Yes VMware has to create a new compatible Fusion version with Yosemite... This Tech Preview is just not compatible with the Yosemite kernel.

And also to manage correctly the RAM in this new OS X because with Mavericks Fusion 6 is not optimized. I have 16Gb Ram and cannot do a vSphere test lab without running out of memory 😞

Hi elit!

The error messages are the same, and the cause is similar, but the remedy will not be the same.  In this case, we have to adjust Fusion to take into account the new location of the kernel as well as to make other updates and changes to achieve compatibility with the new kernel in Yosemite.

Thanks,

I realize that 10.10 was announced just over a week ago, but I hope that the VMWare team is listening and getting ready to release an update or beta / preview. I would be willing to be able to test any beta product from VMWare.

I'll bet they already have something running internally, but their deadline is probably whenever Yosemite is released.
