hello , since i've upgraded on leopard, i can't use anymore vmware fusion. The osx kernel panics.
ethernet seems involved to this crash. Before the black ring of the death appears, the console window, print a lot of error messages concerning "vlance" and i use pxe network boot over nfs on one of my vm machines ( it works succesfully on tiger )
i tried vmware on several installation type :
1.1b on leopard upgrade
1.1rc1 on leopard upgrade ( 1.1b desinstalled before )
1.0 on leopard fresh install
1.1rc1 on leopard fresh install ( uninstall 1.0 before )
Here below the result message :

Until the problem be solved, rollback on tiger
thanks
joelindien (awesome nickname, btw. Is it a reference to the character in the french version of the Tom Sawyer cartoon?),
Sorry to hear about this problem. We have reproduced it only once in-house so far, which is not a good sign
Do you manage to reproduce the issue consistently all the time? If yes, what is your exact setup? (what is the VM's .vmx file, and what is the VM doing)
Let's start by trying to narrow down the problem:
1) Does it happen if you use a different networking mode in your VM (for example NAT vs Bridged)
2) If you use Bridge, does wired vas wireless make any difference?
3) If you use NAT and it still happens, does it happen if you kill the 'vmware-bridge' process?
Thanks.
first of all, Thanks to join me to solve this problem.
- my nickname issue from a movie
- what do you mean exactly by not a good sign ?? hardware problem ?
- i only use wired network
- i only use bridged network
by the way, TM is desactivated, vmware is the only third app installed, it happens a few minutes after one of my pxe diskless vm has launched. I've followed all the procedure to uninstall or downgrade Vmware before test another version.
do you need more informations ?
sorry, i've forgot some information :
my vm has a debian distribution installed ( etch version ). the system boot over pxe. it load the kernel over tftpboot and mount root file system over nfs. my VM act as a mail server.

The weird thing is that VMware wasn't even running at the time of the kernel panic. It happened while I was gone with the machine running.
I have gone from VMware lockups to this. I was told to disable Time Machine, but the moment I do this, the system has paniced twice while I am away. And the info seems to point back to VMware yet again.
What gives?

I'm using a macbook pro 2.4 ghz, 2 gb ram, and santa rosa chipset. I hope this helps pinpoint the problem.

Thanks for your reports, guys. We are trying to reproduce the issue in-house.
I encounter this bug occasionally while compiling the FreeBSD kernel on a FreeBSD guest OS which mounts source and destination directories from host over NFS (host-only networking).
This is the latest mac os crash using the latest Fusion Version 1.1 (62573) running off a bootcamp partiton. This is a bit frustrating that it keeps crashing :(.
I installed this by first running the uninstall script prior to running the vmware installer.

I can't seem to find a vmware log from near the time of the crash so here is one from after the crash.
From what i see near the vmware is having several errors. Any ideas?

I think those are fine, I notice them in my normally-functioning VMs too.

sigh.. just got another mac os crash with vmware fusion 1.1 and 10.5.1 running a bootcamp install...
Windows wasn't even running anything other than its normal processes, just idling.
I am getting to the point where I'm not sure if I going to be able to continue using Vmware at all.

I found the log from the previous crash.
cklemac,
In the past, we have triggered many OS X bugs in their kernel socket stack. I would not be surprised if that is the case here.
> This is a bit frustrating that it keeps crashing
It will keep crashing until either Apple fix the bug, or we find a workaround for it. For now we are trying to reproduce it in-house, which we have failed to do so far.
thanks for a response, crashed mac os again today. I really like fusion and I pre ordered it during the intial beta, but it's completly unusable like this for me.
Prior to leopard I never any had issues with fusion, but I have already ruled out my leopard installation as a fault left over from tiger, as I performed a clean install.
I going to install parallels and see if I get any kernel panics from it.
here's my system configuration if that helps

My number #1 source of Leopard kernel panics so far has been putting OS X to sleep while a Parallels VM is running. Needless to say I don't make that mistake anymore. Good luck.
I can reproduce it without fail. I have a RedHat 8 guest VM (stop laughing out there, I have legacy systems to support) that causes this exact 'corrupted so_rcv' panic every time I try to compile my source tree which is NFS-mounted from the host. This works reliably in Tiger and craters every time under Leopard.
I've switched back to Parallels for this VM only, and it works fine over there. No problems with my other VMs (Ubuntu, Fedora, XP, and QNX 4) thus far.
Hey guys. I just moved over from Parallels to Fusion, and I notice that when I sync my blackberry, I receive Kernel Panics pertaining to the IOUSB kit...and this is from both Virtual Machines.
Now, my suggestion would be in order for VMware to replicate the gentleman's issue in-house, perhaps he can send his Virtual Machine (or upload via FTP) and see whether this can help? Just my 2 cents.
Good luck!
Allen
-Edit- ... I just wanted to include the error I was receiving when syncing my BlackBerry:

Seeing some problems with my Fedora VM now. Same scenario, compiling in a directory mounted from the host via NFS. Doesn't panic, but I'm seeing lots of bogus permissions and ownership and such on object files generated by the compiler. Guess I'm switching back to Parallels.
