vCOPs licensing

A couple questions about per VM licensing with vCOPs

  1. If I license all my VMs with per-VM licensing, will vCOPs still allow me to view host metrics?  Or will I need to do CPU licensing for that?
  2. I have around 100VMs.  Sometimes it will be around 115.  I'm debating whether I need 4x 25VM packs or 5x 25VM packs.  What's the impact if I am temporarly over my license limit?  Will some VMs not be monitored for this time frame or just a warning message?

Thanks.

1. Per VM will give you metrics for all VM's, datastores, etc just like the CPU license with the suite.

2.  It will give you a backsplash warning saying licenses exceeded till you go back under the number.

Hi

As mentioned by markdjones82, there will be a watermark on the vCOps Web indicating that you have exceeded the licensed capacity when you exceed 100 VMs.

To comply with the licensing terms and monitor a supported number of objects you can limit the number of virtual machines monitored by vCenter Operations Manager as described in this KB: VMware KB: Selecting a subset of the vCenter Server inventory to monitor in vCenter Operations Stand...

Please note if you choose to select a subset objects, the metrics will become somewhat "skewed" as vCOps will not present the right picture of the environment's actual utilization that it should be.

If you prefer a CPU-based licensing, you can consider upgrading to vSOM VMware vSphere with Operations Management Overview ... or vCloud Suite vCloud Suite: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) & Cloud ...
