Disabling certain alerts at certain times

Fellow vRopers,

We have backups running during the night that always seems to raise the high disk I/O alerts. I get about 300 alerts in my Inbox. DTs don;t seem to handle it. Is there anyway we can term off SPECIFIC alerts during our backup period. I've lloked at Time Ranges and Maintenance Schedules but these seem to turn off the whole policy. I'm dabbling with the idea of two policies one for "normal" operations and one for the backup period. Any ideas/comments?

VRops has an API where it is possible to put an object into maintenance mode. If your backup software gives you the possibility to do pre and post tasks? I would create a few lines of code to put object into and out of maintenance mode.
