VM powered off suddenly, can't restart

A colleague was running a VM that had an ISO file mounted from an SMB share that was running fine until it sufddenly powered off. vmware.log shows the following error block repeated ad nauseum until the log got truncated

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| VMXAIOMGR: Retry on read "/dev/cdrom" : Input/output error..

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| VMXAIOMGR: system : err=1282 errCode=5 freeSpace=3113443328

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| VMXAIOMGR: "/dev/cdrom" : read s=663552 n=4096 ne=1

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| VMXAIOMGR: v[0]=0x11159000:4096

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| Msg_Question:

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| http://msg.vmxaiomgr.retrycontabort.unknown Operation on file "/dev/cdrom" failed (Input/output error.).

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| Choose Retry to attempt the operation again. Choose Abort to terminate this session.

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| Choose Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system.----

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| MsgIsQuestionAnswered: Using builtin default 'Retry' as the answer for 'msg.vmxaiomgr.retrycontabort.unknown'

Jul 02 15:51:05.805: vmx| Msg_Question: msg.vmxaiomgr.retrycontabort.unknown reply=0

How do I answer the question to make it stop retrying?

May be a silly question, but did you remove the ISO mapping form the vm?

Yes I changed the CD drive to the host device, which is an empty drive, still no starty. The same thing happened earlier yesterday with another similar VM. There may be a problem with the ISO image file, but I'm curious about how to recover the VM when this happens

There should be a vmware.log in the same folder on your esx host as your vm. That should, hopefully, have more info as to the nature of the problem. Attach that log to a post and we can help troubleshoot.

Here's the log. It basically contains thousands of copies of the message I pasted in the initial question

Ok, let's simplify a bit. Edit the vm settings, and remove the cd drive. Then restart, and if unsuccessful, please post the new vmware.log.
