PKIX path building failed / Can not Add vCenter

When I try to add a vcenter in the the web ui. I get the following error

The certificate with thumbprint [EE:DD:CC:BB:AA:11:22:33:44:55:66:77:88:99:00:ZZ:YY:XX:WW:VV], provided by your vCenter is not valid due to error: "sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target"

Press "CONTINUE" if you would like to proceed adding the vCenter with invalid certificate.

However if I continue it will not accept the vcenter credentials. Anyone have any ideas here ? I have verrified the user and password used do allow this user to log into vcenter .

I even applied the 2.0.0.2 upgrade to see if this resolved the issue and it did not.

* I obscured the real thumbprint .
