Can 2 VM's use the same LUN? Shared storage for an Oracle DB.

Can 2 VM's, say a dev & stage Linux VM, use the same storage lun? Like if I have an Oracle database and wanted the dev & stg servers to use the same database?

Thank you.

The VMs can use the same RDM LUN, but you would need to ensure that the OS and application are aware that the LUN is being shared -- using some sort of cluster services.

You basically add a second virtual SCSI controller that has that LUN presented to it and configure your clustering software as appropriate.

Yes, though you'll need a TON of software to make that happen. Some sort of clustering technology....for oracle, the way you'd have to do this is with oracle clusterware and RAC - not cheap.

Or...the two VMs can use the same LUN at different times. Since you're looking at two different environments, it's possible you can turn one off when you need to use the other...
