vpxuser on standalone ESXi

Jump to solution

Hello there.

I always thought that vpxuser is created on ESXi during the process of attaching it to vCenter. Hoewever I figured out that this account exists on ESXi even if the host is not managed by vCenter and never was (I dont know where i`ve read the info that vpxuser exists only if the host is managed by vC, there is no such info here vSphere 5.5 Documentation Center). So my question is: what vpxuser need for in case of standalone ESXi? And could the modification of its permissions or password somehow affects the standalone host?

I can't tell you the reason why, but with the latest ESXi versions (including 6.0) vpxuser is a predefined account on the host, and not only created with adding the host to vCenter Server as in older versions. The latest documentation (Assigning Permissions for ESXi) includes this design change.

Thank you for yor answer.

So I was not entirely wrong, there was older releases of ESXi where vpxuser was not predefined. Also I`ve changed vpxuser password (with "passwd") on standalone host and nothing happened, I still have access to it. I guess vpxuser is not used until the host is attached to vCenter.

That's how I understand it too.
