vmware tools script for ubuntu to detect if the guest operating system HDD is still available (trying to manage a APD/PDL to allow application clustering to move services to another machine)

We are testing ESXi 6 and looking at the PDL/APD management. CUrrently it takes about 3min30 to fail the DIsk and then restart the Virtual machines on another host. I have never used the vmware tools scripts so don't know where to start. Basically I wnat the script to try write to the disk, if after x seconds it is unsuccesful it must then shutdown a specific service (Postgres or Wildfly) so that the Clustering features inherint in these services will then promote a new master. The Guest OS is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS server. I have installed the tools using the ubuntu PPA
