Upgrading to 7.0U2 with IDSDM module (SD cards)

hello,

we have more than 10 servers we want to upgrade from ESXi 6.5U3 to 7.0U2. These servers have one IDSDM module with 2 SD cards in RAID-1, where ESXi 6.5U3 is installed nowadays.

According to ESXi 7.0 hardware requirements the only SD cards storage option for ESXi is not recommended. The recommendations to install ESXi 7.0 are the following ones:

So we are dealing with two options:

  • Option1: Add to every server one HDD. So, we think we can upgrade easily the current ESXi 6.5U3 because we maintain SD cards for the boot partitions and HDD would be used for OSData volume. We assume that the ESXi installed should be able to deal with one upgrade to 7.0U2 like this one.
  • Option 2: Add to every server one BOSS PCIe card with 2 SSD in RAID-1. With this option we need to upgrade the current ESXi 6.5U3 located in the IDSDM module (2 SD cards) to ESXi 7.0U2 located in the BOSS (2 SSD) storage.
    • It is possible to "upgrade" o do we need to perform a clean installation in this case because we change the location of the installation?
    • If we need to perform a clean install, can we maintain the initial configuration of ESXi and vSAN disk-groups of every server? Or we will have to reconfigure ESXi/vSAn again?

Did you ever have to change the installation media of ESXi ? How did you proceed ? If we have vSAN, it is more difficult?

Thanks for your help!

Christian
