Upgrade virtual hardware: general system error

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade the virtual hardware on our VMs now we have upgraded to vsphere. Once the VM is shutdown and I right click - upgrade virtual hardware, I get this error:

A general system error occured: Unknown Error.

Helpful, huh. Has anyone come across this?

Not too sure about your specific issue, but make sure the tools are upgraded first, unlike previous releases.

Please award points to any useful answer.

Hello randomnut,

Are you sure that you made succesfull ugrade of ESX hosts and VMFS stores?

If yes you must upgrade VM tools inside OS of your VM.

Last thing is to upgrade vHW. (In VI3 you must first upgrade vHardware and then VM tools. For vSphere4 - first VM tools and then vHardware)

Maybe a little late to help you but we are experiencing the same issue on some of our VMs. I don't know what the reason is (and I would still like to find out) but we've found that if you remove the machine from Inventory and then add it back in the hardware upgrade will complete successfully.
