Scenario: I must create a VM on my local ESXi 6.5 stack then physically mail the files within the datastore to my customer who will upload them to their own datastore and create a new VM on ESXi 6.0.
Question: When creating a new VM, under the Select a name and guest OS screen there is a drop down to select the compatibility.
If I select ESXi 6.0 virtual machine from this list, can the datastore files be copied directly to another ESXi 6.0 host?
Additionally, is there anything else to consider, such as the hardware version or virtual machine version as in previous versions of ESXi:
Is this screen as found in the ESXi 5.5 new VM setup the similar to the compatibility selection in ESXi 6.5?
Notes:
I consulted the document found on docs.vmware.com but was unable to determine that my scenario would be successful.
(please forgive me if I did not select the correct community for this topic - there are just so many good ones to choose from!)
yes. if you selected 6.0 version then it is compatible in both the ESXi versions
yes. if you selected 6.0 version then it is compatible in both the ESXi versions
The answer I was hoping for. I'd have really hated to look like an idiot sending my customer across the country a set of files on a USB stick only to find out they are useless to him.
What about the hardware version as found here?
The only thing I can find about setting or changing the hardware version is only available in the vSphere Web Client. Is this true?
Yes
