Hi All,
I using ESXi 5.1 Free version one host and 3 windows server 2008 R2 guest OS.
I need to backup and plan to purchase Symantec Backup Exec 2012 on next month but vendor said "all backup software not support ESXi Free" because service API disable so, I have to purchase vSphere Essentials.
Is it factual information? If yes, Can suggest me for other solution?
Thanks
Preeda S.
refer the page 32 of Backup Exec (tm) 2012 Software Compatibility List (SCL)

Note: A vSphere Standard license is required for BE 2012 to correctly protect the ESXi hosted guest systems.
Note: All free versions of ESXi (4i and 5) require a minimum license from VMware in order to be protected by Backup Exec. This is due to the lack of vStorage API for Data Protection support in the free unlicensed versions of ESXi and is a current limitation of VMware.
so a license is needed
are you trying to backup esxi or windows....
if it is windows then no issues.... and for esxi i am not sure just try it there is no issues to do try
for esxi and virtual machines it is worth to try.. VEEAM solution
http://www.veeam.com/vm-backup-recovery-replication-software.html?ad=menu
I have not tried becuase vendor will do it when we purchased Symantec.
Now I would like to confirm information from vendor is true or not?
Can anyone confirm me?
Thanks
are you trying to backup esxi or windows....or virtual machine itself ?
My boss want to backup to LTO tape and we have no tape media now.
So, I just need information before purchase new LTO tape and backup software.

If you want to backup free ESXi edition take a look at ghettoVCB or Trilead VM explorer
You might also look at Thinware vBackup (www.vbackup.com). It supports image-based backup of virtual machines running on ESXi Free.
