Installed ESXi4.0 and vSphere 4, where is clone option ?

Hi guys,

Been searching for a while on this one but everything I've read says just right click the VM and select clone, I've built an ESXi 4.0 server using a HP ML110 G5 and connected to it using an XP machine running vSphere Client 4. I can create new machines no problem but cannot find an option to clone machines is this only an option in the paid for version ?

Also I have been sent a license key is this only for ESXi 4.0, will my version of vSphere client expire ?

Cheers

Pete

You need vCenter Server to have the clone function.

But there are also other ways to clone a VM.

No its ONLY available via vCenter. vCenter centrally manages your ESX hosts, and that's the option for cloning.

Client licenses never expire. You just won't get support beyond the license date.

Pete,

Yes, vCenter is a for pay option that provides centralized management of your Virtual Infrastructure. It allows for options like, cloning, vMotion, DRS, and HA.

You can use the following to make clones ghettoVCB. You will need to enable ssh on the ESXi host and run the scripts remotely. You can also use VMware Standalone converter to make copies of your VMs.
